Venture Capital for Black Entrepreneurs
Having enough money to fund a company, especially a technology company, can be a make-it or break-it factor in a technubian entrepreneur’s success. The problem is getting the required investment money. Once you get willing investors, you have to negotiate how much ownership you give up in return for their investment dollars. There are black venture capital firms like Carthage Venture Partners and Ascend Venture Group, LLC that invest in emerging technology companies during their early stages of development but black investors will also want their fair share of green profits. I’ll consider compiling a list of black venture capital firms that will be updated as I find additional companies. Be careful–these firms are subject to the same economic forces as any other business. They may not remain black-owned as they achieve greater success or they might fail if they don’t generate profit for their investors through a stable portfolio. Case in point: Ebony ran an article in June 2000 about “Black Pioneers in the High-Tech World” and its interesting to see what hot sites are no longer active.
