Amazon’s Kindle Offers Free Internet Access

News / Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Yep, no monthly access fees or Internet service provider contract. It’s all based on using a Kindle ebook reader which is equipped with Whispernet–Amazon’s wireless access to their online store and the Internet in general.

How’s it work? Each Kindle 2 has a built-in Sprint 3G modem and Amazon has worked a deal with Sprint where you can access the net with your Kindle at no additional cost. The primary intent is that you use Whispernet to make purchases and sync your Kindle but a secondary benefit is open access to the rest of the net.

The only drawbacks are the lack of color and the Kindle will not render complicated sites properly as it is built to display text cleanly and simply–but it does work well for general reference to conduct searches and you can even use it to post Tweets to your Twitter account among other things.
